Drive Traffic to Your Site

Internet success relies on traffic. Anyone can drive traffic to a site. The catch is, success comes not from "any" kind of traffic, but "targeted" traffic. The first step is to know your customer's Internet habits. The second is to tap into the 3 primary sources of traffic.

Generate a Flood of Targeted Traffic
An Internet business relies on traffic. Without it, the business is dormant. Fortunately, there are ample ways to generate a flood of traffic to a website. The key for Internet businesses is not just any kind of traffic, but targeted traffic looking for what the business offers.

Any Traffic vs Targeted Traffic

There are countless companies offering to drive traffic to a website for a fee. The key, however, is that just any traffic is not sufficient. For example, if you have a cat merchandise website, it would not be beneficial to draw visitors looking for home improvement advice or organic doggie treats. The key is to attract visitors with a problem that you offer a solution for.

Know Thy Customer

The first step in attracting targeted traffic is to know what your customer does online. What sites do they visit? What blogs do they read? What forums do they participate in? What sites draw their attention? Once you know your customers online habits, the easiest thing to do is to offer what they are looking for.

Three Primary Sources of Traffic

The first primary source of traffic is an abundant supply of search engine optimized, thematically relevant, content on your site. Such content will draw the search engines to your site where they will offer your site in the organic (free) search engine results pages for the targeted keywords you already established.

The second primary source of traffic is incoming links, preferably from thematically relevant sites. Your site needs to have what is called "link bait." This is content that is of such high quality that other sites will link to it, passing their visitors on to yours. Incoming links are absolutely critical for targeted traffic.

The third primary source of traffic is paid advertising. The major search engines off sponsored listings where you can post an advertisement linking to your site. The ads are built around appropriate keywords, and written to draw targeted traffic to your site. This is the fastest way to draw traffic to your site.

Thematically Rich Content

The content on your site is like your piece of Internet real estate. The more content you have, the bigger your share of the Internet pie. The more content you offer also increases the chances the visitor will stay longer on your site, increasing the odds of taking one of your desired actions. Such content can be articles, videos, blog postings, forums, or anything else that is thematically relevant to your business.

Blogs and Social Networking Sites

Blogs are immensely popular, and very effective. The content is often syndicated throughout the Internet, increasing the chances that your targeted traffic will see it and be drawn to your site. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, and Digg, to name just a few, are also very popular and strategies to make them commercially beneficial are abundant. The key with blogs or social networking is consistency of posts.
